Method Cards, Inquiry and Strategic Innovation

I have been deeply interested in the inquiry process throughout my career, initially as a teacher and administrator in public education and now as a designer. This philosophical approach, which I have applied in teaching science to students and to my design work, has been the cornerstone of my professional work. At its core, inquiry is driven by questions, which are essential in uncovering beliefs and perspectives and the information required to address challenges and opportunities.

I believe that many organizations rush to solutions without taking the time to ask the right questions. Effective decisions, plans, and actions should start with asking stakeholders insightful questions that can guide strategic progress.

From this perspective, I have always been interested in how method cards could foster an inquiry-based approach to strategic decision-making. If you are unfamiliar with method cards, think of them as a deck of cards that are used to facilitate questioning, collaborative engagement and exploration. The cards can contain ideas, resources, questions, or a combination of these that are used with a variety of techniques to help people think and create strategically.

The AI Classroom Integration Deck that I have developed consists of 67 cards; each card presents an essential question that supports the development of a strategic plan for the use of AI in teaching and learning.  Accompanying the deck are 14 games, each utilizing the cards differently to create a pathway from ideation to the creation of goals and strategies that compose a strategic plan. The deck is supported by additional resources, forming a comprehensive platform that can support successful implementation of artificial intelligence in the classroom.  The games, and the experience, are designed to be played collaboratively with colleagues.

Currently, educators are at varying stages of integrating AI into their teaching practices. After the initial excitement, there is a clearer understanding of AI's capabilities and limitations. But it is evident that AI is here to stay, and today's students will need exposure and experiences with AI to develop the skills and understanding necessary to navigate and leverage this technology effectively in their future careers and everyday lives. This process should begin in the classroom under the guidance of professional educators, which will require a well-thought-out plan.

My AI Classroom Integration Deck will help you develop that plan. It launches on Tuesday, August 6. Please watch this space for more information about this great new tool!
